Sloane nodded, silently leaving them for just a moment. He got two paper plates from the kitchen and, filling them with food, brought them back to the child. He set one in front of the man and handed the other to the child. He motioned to the pews. One set had a long, deep scratch along it. Sloane flinched when he saw it.
"Sit. Eat."
