On the Docks Empty On the Docks

Post by Ami Sat Aug 22, 2009 2:03 pm

Joshua and Marco were busy sitting on the docks. The weather was warm and the sun tingled there skin lightly tanning them. Joshua's older brother had his usual trusty pole in the water as well as a few nets to catch fish to sell to the surviving humans on the island. although the goverment told the two to leave the isaland Joshua heavily refused. He loved this island be it infected or not. Marco wasn't so sure.

As Joshua's brother was busy Joshua heard foot steps behind. He turned around and sighed, another hungry mutants afer them. Josh jumped up and slid out his twin blades. He hated dealing with messes like these.

On the Docks Empty Re: On the Docks

Post by Abspell Mon Aug 24, 2009 4:35 pm

Evi adjusted his cap. His small hands were wrapped around a worn, gray rabbit
stuffy; clutching the thing as if it it contained a donor heart. His usual blue messenger
bag was slung over one shoulder, carrying his possessions. In favor of the weather, he had
discarded the usual orange sweater for a pale-green t-shirt.

His body language suggested that everyone around him stayed far away. No, the little kid
did not your help, assistance, whatever. For the third time this month, Evi stood at
the empty shipyard, hoping one of the passers-by would be his stupid, long-haired
blond, smiling brother. Of course, after an hour of standing around doing nothing, Evi was
reading to head home and give up for the day.

He took another glance at the worn photo he held in one hand. It showed a skinny teen
flinging around a young boy, possibly his sibling. The skinny teen was Evi's retard brother,
and looking at the photo made Evi almost believe that Daniel was still alive.

Yeah, right.

Around him, he could hear the shuffling of bodies. Probably more desperate mutants.
Scattered loners who has happened to come together. Pathetic. They thought they could
survive like this, but it was only a matter of time before people lost what little sense of
humanity they still had left. And then they'd eat each other.

Joshua saw the mutant. It was deformed and looked like it was wasting away, desperate for a taste of food, a taste of life. However the only life it wanted at this point in time was Joshua's and he simply wouldn't allow that to happen. Contrary to popular belief, Josh loved his ability to still be alive.

The mutant charged at the humand and Josh crossed his blades, creating a small shielf with the silver blades and when the mutant charged, he kept his ground and pushed back. A small grunt escaped Josh's lips involuntarily as the mutant shreiked, thinking it was closer to its prey. This mutant was unstable and Joshua could tell. He took a leap and a flip backwards and with some fancy footwork he was able to confuse the starving lifeform until stunned,

And as soon as the mutant was confused his head was hit to the ground with a sound thud. Joshua sliced the head off with his blades and he poked the body, having it fall over too. The boy slid the blades in their sheaths and he smiled. "That was easy!" he said with a chuck;e. He then heard footsteps. He looked to see a child there. He wondered if he was a human or a mutant

As he neared the scene of the fight, Evi made sure to pay
close attention. The older boy, the redhead, had a distinct killing aura.
He surveyed the decapitated mutant and sneered. Exactly what he had
said before. When someone becomes consumed by the monster within,
it starts to take form.
The redhead boy was staring at Evi, as if expecting the child to say
something. Evi flashed him a childish smile and walked forward, instead
of talking. Only when he stood directly in front of the redhead boy did he
talk.
"Hello, mutant hunter! Thank you for getting rid of that monster,"
the smile devolved into a smirk, and he glanced over at the corpse. "Now
it's devolution will end. Congratulations.
" His tone was mocking.
He grinned.
"I know exactly what you're thinking: 'who is this kid, and why is he
talking as if he's the smartest person in the world?'
" He tilted his head
to one side. "But maybe I am. My name is Evi, and I'm glad to meet
you,
" he stuck his hand out.

Joshua smiled at the young boy. He had a bit of a mouth but any child did have their moments to sound cocky or arrogant. "Well it's nice ta meetcha Evi. The names Joshua but you can call me Josh" he told the boy and shook his hand. "And I'm sorry kid but I'm no hunter. Me and my brother down over there are just your regular fishermen with some fight in us to survive." he explained to him with a small laugh. Being called a mutant hunter made Joshua feel a little weird in his gut. He felt like a monster like the one he had just killed/

Evi smirked and tapped his nose. "But you smell like
an herbivore. You're have your first taste of meat, and now you're
reluctant to stop. However, you are scared of this and try to continue
peacefully by eating greens.
" He laughed. "Don't worry, it's
not a power. It's just something I've developed over the years of
dealing with people.
"

At the mention of fish, his stomach growled loudly. Evi winced and
dipped his head, refusing to look at Joshua. How long had it been
he'd last eaten something? He hadn't had breakfast, as usual. It
had to be at least two o'clock now, so he'd missed lunch too.
Suddenly, he felt rather whoozy.

As if to agree, his stomach continued it's loud protests.

Joshua smiled at the kid. He certainly was different, well different besides being a mutant. The fact of that never really changed his judgement. In Josb's mind that simply meant he had a few extra gifts than he did. But as he looked into the boy's eyes he could see the twink;e of hunger, and Joshua didn't like that fact. "C'mon o introspective one, I can tell you need a good meal. Join me and my brothwer and we'll make you a feast!" he told the boy with a smile and a laugh once again. Joshua enjoyed helping people, be it humans or mutants out.

Evi chuckled nervously, as if embarrassed, and followed Joshua.
As they walked, Evi yawned and broke the silence.
"I know that you've realized I'm a mutant. He said, bluntly. "And
that you're wary of me. Understand that I am nothing like those
pathetic monsters you kill. Not all of us are. At least in appearance. In
truth, I suppose, we're all monsters. But those mutants are the
ones that lost restraint and allowed the monster to come out,
" he
smiled sheepishly, "Or that's my theory, at least. I'm sort of a
passive researcher. I'm sorry if I'm annoying you.
"
Not that Evi really was, but it was the right thing to do: apologizing
when you've done something you believe in stupid.

"Let's switch the topic to something nicer," Evi said with a genuine
smile, "How's the fishing around here these days? Must be pretty
good if you're willing to give some away to needy, introspective kids.
" He
smirked.

Joshua couldn't help but let a small laugh escape his lips. The child was truly something else and a bright one to boot. Joshua wasn't the brightest crayon in the box but he wasn't the dullest by far. "I don't care if youi're a mutant a human or something inbetween Evi, I don't care what anyone is really. I live to help out people as long as they dont try to take a bite out of me" he said, adding the joke at the end lightly. "Don't worry, you're not annoying at all. I enjoy other company besides my brother. Its a good change of pace." he added on as well as they slowly got closer towards Marco and their large fishing boat. Since the earthquake destroyed their last boat over the years they created an even larger, more sturdy boat that doubles as a home. They loved the water and it was safter on sea than land at night for a couple of humans.

When Josh heard the change of topic he smiiled. "Fishing is pretty good. Nothing has changed really in the patterns luckally. I reckon me and my brother are the only two who truly rely on fish as a source of food. Everyone else think its mutated and if thats true, then it just makes them tastey" he added on. Joshua was very lighthearted and didn't mind talking about any topic, even the harder and touchier ones. "But don't worry about the supply, you're a growing kid and you need some food down your gullet" he fiinished before they just about reached Marco. He was still sitting on the edge with his pole, spacing out into the horizion.

Evi tagged along after Joshua, and the action was reminiscent
of a kitten chasing after an old tomcat. He listened patiently as Joshua spoke.
Eventually, they came closer to the water, and Evi noticed the boat
Presumably it belonged to Joshua and his 'brother', seeing as the redhead
gazed at it with some sort of pride. It looked undeniably sturdy. Evi
was impressed.
"Nice boat," he remarked, offhandedly. "Is it entirely wind-powered,
or do you use a motor?
" Not that he was entirely interested. Just
something nagging at the back of his head.

As they neared the boat, Evi caught sight of another human. He was older
than Joshua (though Evi wasn't one to take a stab at guessing ages), but
his hair was a similar shade of fiery red. Just shorter. Gee, that must stand
out like a flashlight in a dark alley.
But Evi smiled, suddenly feeling a little shy. He wasn't sure what to think of
Joshua's brother based on first sight alone.

Joshua grinned when his boat was complimented. "Thanks!" he chimed lightly before speaking again "Me and Marco made it ourselves after the earthquake and all. It took a lot of work and rummaging through the island but we got it together. We have a large motor to get it moving but we usually set sails up to conserve the feul. We don't use gasoline though. Marco is a bit better than I am and is able to make a different kind of fuel so we wont run out." Joshua explained.

Marco suddenly heart footsteps. He recognized the heavy steps of Joshua but the lighter ones confused him. It had to be that of a boy. He chose not to turn around as he spoke, he kept an eey on the water. "Who do you have Joshua? Another dinner guest?" he asked in a slightly gruff voice. Unlike Joshua, Marco had a bit of a cld tone to his voice. He didn't care much for anybody after the accident. He didn't care for the island he just cared to survive and have his brother survive as well.

((This is a basic shape of the boat: https://2img.net/h/i94.photobucket.com/albums/l118/RRCRT67/2008-07-30-CapeCodCanal-Mom-Rose-16.jpg but its not white. Its a darker shade and much more worn out ))

Evi sighed, "Your brother brought home a stray,
hungry kid who's been standing around here all day trying to
figure out if anyone's seen his older brother. And since, once
again, he has not found his brother this, coupled with
the previous mentioned state of hungry, has turned the stray
kid into a very cranky person.
"

In agreement, his stomach rumbled, louder than before. He
grimaced.
"I'm guessing that I'll collapse into a dead faint in, let's say...
five minutes if I don't eat soon.
"

He flopped down into a sitting position, still clinging onto the
gray rabbit stuffy.

Joshua looked at Marco. "We gotta help him Marc! Listen to him. And don't you remember the promise we made when we finished the S.S. Marcella!" he said walking over towards his older brother. "Don't you remember?" he prodded further, his forest green eyes pleading.

Marco let out a small sigh. "Yes I remember." he commented looking up at his brother, his eyes were unmoved by the pleading look. "Why is it that you always seem to find the random stray mutants?" he aske, feeling a tug on his pole. In one fluiid momement his tugged it back, making the fish fly out of the water towards the older male. Marco lifted his hand up and caught the fish and threw it in the bucket beside him, all while staring at Joshua's unmoving stare. Marco looked down. "Fine. We'll feed him as well."

Joshua smiled. "Thank you!" he cried out and went over towards the boy and scooped him up in the air and began to carry him onto the large boat. Marco stood up and grabbed the bucket and followed

Evi barely had time to register the situation before he was
thrown, rather roughly, over Joshua's shoulder. On instinct, he
began flailing, "S-stop! What're you d-doing! Put me down! I
said, put me down!
" Of course, despite his wailing, his wishes
weren't granted.

When the entered the boat, Evi was promptly released, falling unsteadily
onto the floor. He dusted himself off, and looked around.
The interior of the boat wasn't much, with a feel amenities and some
bunks, but it had an unusual, home-y feeling that Evi wasn't
used to.

He sat down on a nearby chair.

Joshua smiled as the boy sat down on the chair. "Alright Marco its my turn to cook! Hand over that bucket." he called out to his brother who had just walked into the boat and closed the door behind him. He pressed a btton or two and a small cooling system began to work throughout the interior of the boat. The older male walked over and dropped the large bucket with a few ffreshfish inside of it on the countertop.

"I caught more and put them inside the freezer. I didn't know what concotion you were going to make." Marco said and streched his back lightly, cracking it in the process. Joshua looked in the freezer to see it with a good deal of fish but pulled out a few salmon.

"I think we'll have some grilled salmon with..... rice pilaf and maybe some of those freeze dried veggies. Thats packed with nutrients for you Evi and will keep everyone going nicely." Joshua thought aloud as he tied a small white apron. He turned his head towards the boy. "Are you thirsty?" he asked

Marco rolled his eyes at his brother. Joshua was a bit of a momma's boy when they were growing up and he guessed it paid off now when it was just the two of them. Marco just couldn't help but wonder how he could cook well and kill off so many mutants as the same person. It perplexed him.

Evi blinked quietly for a moment, taking in the odd
feeling that had washed over him. It was... familar, some-
how, with someone cooking a meal for him. When was the last
time he'd eaten grilled salmon? And actual vegetables, instead
of vitamin supplements? He couldn't remember...
He shook his head, "Oh. Yes, please. I am a little thirsty."
He smiled, "I guess I need nutrients, seeing that this is my
first real meal in a year.
"
That was when that little girl had pulled him back to her house.
It had been just her and her father; the rest had been killed
or taken by unknown persons. They'd cooked and shared
shepherd's pie and parsnips.
The next time he'd wandered by the house, two months later,
the girl and her father were gone.
There was probably some sort of significance behind that, but
Evi was too hungry to search for it.

Joshua thought for a minute before he dug into the fridge and pulled out a pitcher of what seemed a dark brown liquid. "I nearly forgot I have some iced tea I just finished brewing a while ago." he commented before pouring a tall glass and handing it to Evi. "I was able to find some tea leaves and froms oem old books I picked up from an old library that had been destroyed I found out how to make it" he explained to the boy before walking back to where he was preparing his meals.

Marco walked over towards where the bunks were and lay down in one, presumably his own. He pulled on a string and a small compartment came out. The male dug his hand in and took out a small piece of paper and looked at it. His cold eyes softened a little as he looked at the paper.

Evi glanced at Marco as he made his way over to
the beds, but he didn't say anything, taking the glass from
Joshua and sipping at it slowly, before chugging it.
When he finished, he wiped his mouth of his sleeve and
sighed a satisfied sigh.

"Thank you," Evi said, and put his glass down. He
dug his brother's picture out of his bag. "Can I ask you
something? Have you seen this guy anywhere?
" He
showed Joshua the picture.

"He'd be about... sixteen by seventeen by now, I think.
His hair's probably shorter, though. He cut it when I last
saw him,
" Evi paused. "He's my stupid brother. I
think he's dead, though.
" The tone he used at the end
was emotionless, and matter-of-fact.

Marco noticed the boy but never paid attention to him. He wasn't in a very good mood today and he had no problem in showing off his overly pissed behavior. If the child had something to say about it the male would give him a mouthful and a half.

Joshua was seasoning the salmon when the boy had shown him the picture of the male and was describing him to him. The firey haired male thought for a second, placing the fish onto the counter. He leaned against the counter and thought for a second. "We'll I've seen tons of people as I go through the island, giving leftovers to those who need them but I'm not sure about you're brother. He doesn't stand out too much right now in my mind but if he does I'll let you know. I promise" he told Evi before turning back to the food and began to put water in a pot and onto the small stove so it could boil

Evi shrugged, trying to hide his dismay. Not here either...
"Like I said, he's probably dead by now. I've been here for two
years and I still haven't found him.
" He slumped further into the
couch. Then he saw Marco glaring at him.

"What," Evi snapped, "Do you want?" He wasn't in the
best of moods, and now the hunger was starting to get to him.
He huffed and melted back into the couch, simmering.

He wondered where he'd go next. He'd already explored the known areas
of Zibyl's north side. Honestly, he had no idea where Daniel was. A few
'leads' had popped up, but they'd all been misleading, or talking about
different people.

Joshua looked at the boy and sighed a bit. "I really am sorry you can't find your brother. Me and Marco still can't find Max after all this time as well. I understand." he commented towards him and saw Marco's cold stares. He shook his head alittle and went back to the food.

Marco looked back at the boy. "I want a lot of things. Doesn't mean I'm gonna get 'em." Marco said gruffly before taking the curtain on the edge of the bunk and swished it across, covering his body. Marco lay on his side, facing away from the curtain.

Joshua listened as the two went at each other. "Hush now Marco. Stop being so grumpy." he scolded his older brother and looked at Evi. "Don't mind him. He always gets like this when he gets a little too much sun."

Joshua listned to the boy until he asked about losing somebody. Joshua nodded and he began to grill the salmon after being seasoned. "Yea. You see me and Marco decided to be stupid and steal our dads boat on the day of the earthquake. We were far out sea when the world started to shake and next thing we knew the two of us were on piles of wreckage we used to call our boat. After a few days of swimming we got ourselves back on Zibyl to our waterfront house to find our parents and our younger sister Marcella dead. Marco was beside himself. Not to mention we couldn't find Max, our oldest brother. We know hes alive somwhere but were not sure where." Joshua explained. his tone of voice was surprisingly light compareed to the heaviness of the subject. The water in the pot boiled and Josh added some rice into it before he spoke again. "Marco didn't speak for a few months he was so upset. I just couldn't help but be thankful to be alive. Now we both survive off of each other and keep an eye out for Max. Kind of like you and you're brother" he added on and smile.

Marco lay down cut off from the two, listening to Joshua speak. He was angered that he could say it the way he did and he was upset that Joshua was so open. The older male was spiteful of the mutants as much as he admitted to be indifferent. His body shudderd a bit, the memories ofthe past pained him.

Evi played with his hands while listening to Joshua's
story. For once in a long time, he actually felt sympathetic
for them. He actually considered offering to make illusions
of their family, if it would make them feel better. Then he
mentally shook his head. What the heck? What're you
doing, acting all sympathetic. They got themselves into this
mess, so don't you go and get all sappy.

Evi shrugged, "My brother and I are exact opposites.
It's kind of weird that way. He loved everyone no matter what,
and I simply hate everyone.
" He sighed and rubbed the
area below his eyes. Talking about Daniel always made him
feel stupid.

"Whatever. If you do happen to see him, tell him that Evi's
looking for him and that I'm going to throttle him on sight.
His name's 'Daniel', okay?
"

He paused, "And, I guess if I run into someone named
Max... I guess I'll tell him about you guys. Maybe.

Joshua could tell that as much as the boy tried to be cold and cut off from people, he had a good heart. He seemed to try hard to act like he was separeated form everyone. After Evi finished talking he smiled an nodded. "Alright you got a deal!" he told the kid and saw that the food was done. "Alright after that it's suppertime!" he called out and fished out three plates and put them down, putting on some of the salmon, rice and greens he cut previously onto each of the plates. He took the three and placed them on the table. "Dig in" he told the boy before lookign towards the bunks. "C'mon Marco you need to eat too! Stop sulking" he told his brother before grabbign silverware and putting it next to the plates.

Marco grumbled a bit but his little brother was right, he needed to eat. He opened up the curtain and stood on the bottom of the boat and walked to the table and sat down. Joshua followed suit and sat down
